Found a bottleneck (nothing like getting pounded to get you some good data), fixed it, and should be able to sustain about double the former hit rate. We'll see.
But yeah, those "references" are piling up fast!
Don't expect to see avatars for a while.... I suspect the code won't go back to "not defensive mode" as long as that link is present.
