The outcome is certain if the nation does nothing, but what are the odds of tackling the debt issue will ruin the nation too? A cut in any spending will have a ripple effect throughout the economy, isn't a depression guaranteed at this point? Both parties know that addressing the issue will have severe consequences at the polls, so neither has a interest. It will take an extraneous event before the nation addresses the issue.
