To be fair a LFTR isn't 'free' either, but it DOES exploit E = mc^2 and since "c" is such a HUGE number you get a god-awful amount out of "E" for every bit of "m" you convert. But make no mistake -- there really is mass converted; it is NOT a free lunch. The problem with hydrides is that they really aren't much better on an energy density basis than a lithium-chemistry battery.
