Spart: The machine I have is an articulating one with multiple point joints on the press bar. It's about as tough to control as free weights (and thus works the control side as well as just strength) but you don't have to have a spotter to use it safely. Free weights (especially a bar and bench) without a spotter will be just fine right up until it's not -- then it's REAL bad. This is what I have -- it will kick your ass.
