Oh Darn, Liberalism Is Wrong Again?

I'm sorry, but this has me smiley ing.....

A Supreme Court spokeswoman says Justice Stephen Breyer was robbed last week by a machete-wielding intruder at his vacation home in the West Indies.

Why is that funny?  Becasue Justice Bryer has said in a Supreme Court opinion:

“I can find nothing in the Second Amendment’s text, history, or underlying rationale that could warrant characterizing it as ‘fundamental’ insofar as it seeks to protect the keeping and bearing of arms for private self-defense purposes.”

What I'd like to know is whether Justice Bryer has now changed his mind, or whether he still continues to hold that opinion, and if so, whether he would still continue to do so if the machete-wielding robber had cleved his wife or one of his guests in two!

After all, a pistol beats a machete, no?  I seem to remember something like this...

The unalienable right to life, secured by the Second Amendment's recognition of an unfettered and personal right to keep and bear arms, magically looks slightly more-attractive when a machete-wielding felon robs (and implicitly if not explicitly threatens to kill) you, doesn't it Stevie......

I'm sure he's thinking more about armed guards for himself and making machetes illegal.

He gave a talk at my law school last year and he had two federal marshalls in the auditorium with him and a flock of police officers outside. I have no idea if this was somehow required of him, but I have my suspicions.

Actually, I bet that crotchety old statist **** will trumpet his brand of treasonous sedition TWICE as loudly now, simply because he and his party DID survive. That's the problem with not carrying out a threat and allowing him to live - he'll think his point is proven (even though his property and dignity are gone).

Not fundamental his old wrinkled ASS....

Interesting trivia about that scene from raiders of the lost ark.

Harrison ford was VERY sick the day they shot that scene. It was originally scripted for him to use the whip to disarm the other guy. Because he was constantly running to **** and puke, they changed it so that he just shot the guy.

I think it's better the way it turned out anyway. :)

Good. Maybe they will keep robbing him until the reason for packing a firearm computes in his liberal brain.

Asi, I'll take it one further - I *believe* what was wrong with Harrison was heat stroke/exhaustion, made tremendously worse by the heavy exertions of the fight you're referring to - I believe there are even some so-called "deleted scenes" of that fight as well.

But in the end, you're absolutely correct - the way the scene plays out is ****in' BEAUTIFUL. I still remember being 7 or 8 and seeing it thinking "This guy is BAD ASS!" - and it SO fit Indy's character and that scene.

You are probably right, I just remembered that he was feeling bad and was thinking sick - heatstroke may have been it. He certainly looks like it right after he turns around after shooting the dude.

Asi, I remember reading that the scene where Ford pulls the gun was originally a gag, and that they liked it so much in post they decided to keep it in... although what you quoted sounds much more believable.

The famous scene in which Indy shoots a marauding and flamboyant swordsman was not in the original script. Harrison Ford was supposed to use his whip to get the swords out of his attacker's hands, but the food poisoning he and the rest of the crew had gotten made him too sick to perform the stunt. After several unsuccessful tries, Ford suggested "shooting the sucker." Steven Spielberg immediately took up the idea and the scene was successfully filmed.

I'm sure people won't like me going all GOP here, but this is why I am highly likely to vote for the GOP presidential candidate despite the GOP's history of having been no debt on the debt ponzi scheme. We might survive a total collapse of the economy and default of our sovereign debt but we won't survive a federal government that considers the constitution an archaic & irrelevant vestigial document. We can talk about both parties being equal on deficit & debt issues, but on crucial Supreme Court decisions (McDonald v Chicago and, yes, Citizens United v Federal Election Committee) the good side only won because of Republican SCOTUS appointees. That doesn't mean they always get it right, but the four ladies of the court will always get it wrong, Mme Breyer included.

Mortgageguynm, you're mistaken in your apparent belief that the US supreme court has the final say on what is or is not Constutional. That is incorrect. The Constitution needs no black-robed interpreters to distort its meaning: see Norton vs Shelby County.

Norton vs Shelby County wrote..
An unconstitutional act is not a law; it confers no rights; it imposes no duties; it affords no protection; it creates no office; it is in legal contemplation as inoperative as though it had never been passed.

Further, if you think "the good side won" in those cases you listed, you're almost certainly mistaken. I've not reviewed either indepth, but I did review the decision that led to McDonald: District of Columbia vs Heller. The Heller decision, translated into plain English, is "the right to keep and bear arms is an individual right which cannot be infringed, except for this supremely long list of infringements included within". In other words, "yes, but no", and that only to keep the peasants from possibly revolting.

I'm pretty sure that, not only will he not change his mind about guns, but after this incident he might start promoting strict regulation of machetes... Sigh.
