But I Thought They Were "Anonymous"?

I try to tell people but they don't like to listen....

The FBI executed search warrants at the New York homes of three suspected members of notorious hacking group Anonymous early Tuesday morning, FoxNews.com has learned.

Jordan's system was identified as allegedly being used in a coordinated distributed denial of service attack against several companies, a law enforcement official told FoxNews.com.

But but but the hackers sputter, you can't identify where these DDOS attacks come from.

Uh huh.

You sure as hell can.  They can be traced to the source(s), and then the source of the command(s) that tell them what to do can be traced.  Then you're busted.

Yeah, it takes some work.  But I was able to run down quite a few of these when I ran my ISP.  See, the carriers that end up having to transport that crap get kinda*****ed off when it happens, because a huge amount of bandwidth gets consumed and they have to pay for the capacity to carry it, which is a fairly serious annoyance.

The backbone carrier's motivation to chase it down is directly proportional to the size of the attack.  The bigger the more motivated they become.  When it's really massive then they get VERY motivated.

Breaking in and stealing something is a security issue, but when you start trying to brute-force people off the air you're spending other people's money, and if they become sufficiently motivated as to the size of what you're stealing, they'll put in the effort to track it down.

It's not, as is commonly believed, impossible.

Sad that I read this and thought, "Hope they didn't have any dogs."

I've seen some anonymous wannabes, who are endlessly prattling on and on about the virtues of democracy, the value of separation of church and state, and then proceed to put on the Guy Fawkes mask to make a statement. Cause we all know the story - Old man Fawkes was merely guarding the gunpowder in the undercroft with the intent of helping to establish a free democracy with separation of church and state and no king...am I right?

Is it possible to get a repetitive motion injury from facepalms?

After having pwned Rupert Murdoch's flagship news website, thesun.co.uk, by redirecting its readers to a spoof front page and pilfer its email servers, Anonymous' unofficial mouthpiece, Sabu, has revealed that the group is "sitting on [the sun's & NOTW's] emails" with a press release from Anonymous & possibly more coming in a few hours.

While that website has already been taken down (you can check a screen capture of the web page here), the email bounty is likely to be potentially more damaging with Sabu releasing details of two of the Sun's top three employees, Rebekah Wade and Bill Akass, the former editors of the Sun and News of the World respectively as well as Lee Wells & Danny Rogers, Editorial Support Manager at News International and Sun Online Editorial Manager respectively, as a taster of what's coming next.

Let's assume that the targets in NY are major players in Anonymous. Let us then assume that Anonymous has some of the goods it claims to have - on BAC and others. Now, let us assume that the FBI arrests these targets. It may be that they'll fold like little children. It is also possible that Anonymous is about to make a major play. For those of us who enjoy watching TPTB trying to deal with a bit of anarchy, it is indeed, time for a little popcorn and beer.

I couldn't help but wonder yesterday if this Murdoch hacking thing was tied into those guys and what do you know? Today they're running raids in NY. And while this little drama is playing out over there, I have to wonder how much of it is going on over here as well.

It's probably just a couple of the idiots who run LOIC to be part of the "in" crowd. The people who created LOIC aren't dumb. They've created a "cool" movement and given the 'tards a tool to do their work for them. IIRC, there's a feature in the newest version of LOIC to let it be controlled via IRC.

At the risk of being banned, I'm impressed how the FBI can track hackers through 7 proxies overnight but not figure out who bought or sold millions of dollars in puts prior to 9/11. I do love how whistleblowers are getting arrested while corporations commit open fraud on a daily basis.

People can mock Anonymous all they want, at least Anonymous is doing something.

I think they know who bought the PUTs. Unfortunately they seem to be in a bunch of pieces, charbroiled.

My understanding is that the options were never cashed and the funds pulled which is supportive of that explanation.

Ah, thanks for sharing that Karl. I wasn't aware they were never paid out. I still feel the lack of disclosure means this information must be really embarrassing to someone.

Anon should start hacking better targets like the Fed and the banks. Or GE.

In all reality Karl...If you were one of the figures pulling the strings in this Anon. group do you really believe you could not insulate yourself from detection...........

I am gonna guess your answer is probably yes....

So what we are seeing today is a giant nothing burger....more theater for the masses.......

Simply pawns in this game getting caught up in that which they understood little....

There will be hundreds of volunteers to replace these pawns, just as there are volunteers who wear suicide belts in other battles.....

these are at best pawns.....

these are not the people they were looking for.
again, is everyone enjoying this show?????

Sabu claimed Tuesday on Twitter that he was not involved in the day's police operations, despite several attempts by hackers in opposition to Anonymous to publicly identify him. One hacker who goes by the name th3j35t3r recently published a suspected name and Portugese address for Sabu on his blog. The LulzSec hacker responded Tuesday by taunting th3j35t3r over the arrests: "Damn, it must hurt you emotionally that I was not part of that."

They probably stopped in the middle of the attack and did a quick post to their facebook account.

ya, no one can trace that.

That's why you have to have a clean computer with Hi-power wifi.

The problem with people like "Anonymous" is that they're not, they're incapable of adhering to good security practices themselves and they cannot keep their damn mouths shut!

The latter, of course, is entirely backward compared to what they want to do. If you work entirely in secret then nobody knows what you're doing, right? How do you get any press - or any "following" - doing that?

Compare with Stuxnet, which NOBODY talked about until it did its "evil" deed and trashed the centrifuges. Oops.
